In ever-changing Dubai, there are few places that have stood the test of time as well as Al Shami Restaurant. Since opening its doors in 1978, this simple, down to earth eatery has developed quite the cult following. A popular shisha hangout in the heart of Deira, they raise the bar when it comes to Levantine cuisine served up just right.
Boasting an eclectic menu of well-known dishes that range from classic shawarmas to more adventurous dishes like grilled liver, it's a true taste of home for many. No wonder the restaurant is constantly surrounded by a brash buzz of hungry patrons, undeterred by the canteen aesthetic or the street side patio; their back-to-basics cooking style is a hit.
Spread over two floors, it has never faulted from its old-school approach. Offering family-only dining upstairs and no-frills seating down, there is a true community feel. From the brick oven comes fresh bread, the seafood counter offers the days catch and the juice bar's flush menu is enough to impress even the most discerning foodie.
We loved the speedy service; considering the packed dining room, the kitchen was sending out plate after plate of hot, fresh food without a pause. The smell alone was enough to convince us we had stumbled on something great; the restaurant is full of the aroma of great food and the chat of happy diners.
Far from the glitz and glam Dubai is known for, Al Shami can feel a little dated. Since opening nearly three decades ago, we doubt it's ever seen a renovation - if it ain't broke...
If you plan on ordering a delivery then do it before you're too hungry; even if you live nearby, they are a little slow off the mark.
You'd think with only one branch in Deira, getting delivery to the South side of the city would be impossible. Well good news, Al Shami will deliver almost anywhere as long as you meet the minimum order - it's AED 150 to JLT and Dubai Marina.
No matter the time of day, Al Shami is always open. Serving 24/7, this eatery is always buzzing be it the late night munchies or the early bird breakfasts. Dining with friends? Order a mixed grill; served on a gold shawaya plate, it's delicious and makes for great Instagram shots.
