We’re all familiar with Chinese food, but have you ever tried traditional Shanghainese cuisine? From pan-fried Chicken Pot Stickers to the traditional Xiao Long Bao, New Shanghai offers an authentic-meets-modern Shanghainese experience.
We recently visited this new foodie hotspot at The Dubai Mall and ordered a couple (well, actually more than a ‘couple’) of top picks from the new menu. Check out the video above for a sneak peek at all the foodie action!
The contemporary street-style décor
At New Shanghai, contemporary street style meets traditional Chinese alleyways. Despite its casual mall setting, the restaurant still has a sophisticated vibe to it that’s both trendy and alluring.
What we loved:
- Authentic cobblestone flooring and Shanghai street-style décor.
- Hand-painted wall murals inspired by classic 1930’s Chinese street art.
- Funky interiors reminiscent of the traditional, colourful alleyways of Shanghai.
Dumplings, Wontons & Baos galore!
With over 80 dishes to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find something that pleases every palate. New Shanghai combines ancient Chinese recipes with contemporary flavours, which is brought to light in new dishes such as the Truffle Xiao Long Bao, Brisket Bao and Lava Rock Shrimps. New Shanghai even has its own secret sauce recipe that’s hidden away in a ‘trusted kitchen’ in Australia!
What we loved:
- Truffle Xiao Long Bao made from scratch in the live dumpling theatre.
- Signature Rainbow Beef drenched in mouth-watering sticky sweet sauce.
- Fragrant Crispy Duck served with steamed lotus leaf buns and soy & hoison sauce.
The authentic Shanghainese experience
New Shanghai offers a unique culinary experience, bringing a true taste of Shanghainese food to Dubai’s restaurant scene. The live dumpling theatre pretty much speaks for itself, allowing passers-by to watch the chefs prepare dim sums and dumplings from scratch (it’s incredibly satisfying to watch!)
What we loved:
- Live dumpling theatre where you can watch each dish go from dough to steamed perfection in minutes.
- Traditional Shanghai-style dining experience with quirky chopstick tips on each placemat.
- Authentic Chinese bowls on every table for the soup dumplings (our waiter taught us how to eat Xiao Long Bao dumplings like a pro!)
